Somatic Principles & Embodiment In Dance & Movement

Dancers know that movement is more than just mindless motion. When we are awake and attentive, movement is our way of connecting to the world within and around us.

When we move with awareness, we are open to the most nuanced of sensations that can guide us with more alignment and grace. Intelligent movement leads to the integration of body, mind, and spirit, so that dancing can become a sustainable and functional art form.

Inspired by the work of Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, founder of Body Mind Centering, Daphne will facilitate an embodied anatomy workshop, exploring the innate patterns of movement to uncover the body as an integrated system. These principles will allow us to move with greater ease from a deeper level of awareness and coordination, while at the same time honour our boundaries through uncovering our nervous system and physiology.

Body Decoding

We notice the different transformations of the body – in our actions and in our behaviours. However, through our dance process, I hope to inculcate the idea of push, pull, send, relax, and application of force to achieve dance bodily movements.

This workshop is suitable for intermediate - advanced dancers who are consistent in their contemporary dance practice and/ or have a strong dance foundation.

Spontaneous Movement Choreography

In this workshop, we will be creating and setting movement material together. Participants will be given various verbal, audio, visual and physical cues and be led to contribute as much or as little as they feel comfortable with on the spot. In this particular workshop, we will focus on the making movement specific to the group and not on the spatial or conceptual elements of choreography.

Let’s meet at the intersection between improvisation and choreography for some dancing, workshopping, and spontaneous, silly fun!
