MAGIS – SIGMA'S FIRST RECITAL
A Call for Dancers!
In its 15th year, Sigma Contemporary Dance announces the creation of MAGIS — a milestone recital bringing together dancers from the Main Company, Youth Wing, and Community Classes of Sigma Collective Space.
Sigma has always been a place of gathering and exchange — where individuals from diverse backgrounds meet, practices intersect, and something greater emerges through shared movement. This production marks the first time our full community comes together on one stage.
We warmly invite you to be part of this special chapter.
Whether you are new to Sigma or returning after time away, you are welcome. To qualify, simply complete a minimum of 12 classes at Sigma Collective Space between now and 30 June 2026.

1. I have never danced before. Can I join the recital?
4. I cannot commit to every rehearsal session. Can I still join?
Please speak with the respective choreographer, or contact us via email or WhatsApp, so we can understand your situation and advise accordingly.
5. Can I fulfill the required classes by taking different teachers’ classes?
Yes. However, you should take most of your classes with the choreographer whose piece you intend to perform in. Eventually, you will also need to commit to the full 12 rehearsal sessions for that specific work. You may discuss with the teachers which item would be most suitable for you.
6. I have never taken a class with Sigma before but I dance actively. Can I join?
Yes. You will need to take at least 12 classes at Sigma, with most sessions in the class of the choreographer whose item you plan to join. This helps both you and the choreographer become familiar with each other before rehearsals begin.
7. How many rehearsals are there?
Please refer to the rehearsal schedule here. To participate in the recital, dancers are expected to commit to all rehearsals as the choreography and staging will build progressively each week. Consistent attendance is important not just for learning the choreography but also for working as an ensemble.
8. When will the recital take place?
Please refer to the rehearsal schedule here. Further details of exact production schedule on bump-in days will be shared once rehearsal groups are confirmed.
9. Will there be rehearsals on stage?
Yes. Technical and stage rehearsals will take place during bump-in dates. Dancers will practise spacing, lighting, and stage transitions then. Attendance is required.
10. Is there a recital participation fee?
The rehearsal package is $460, which covers 12 weekly 2-hour rehearsal sessions leading up to the performance. Sigma Kakis receive 10% off this amount. We are currently securing funding to support the production. Any updates regarding this will be shared once confirmed.
11. What if I have to miss a rehearsal due to travel or work or any other valid reasons
If the booking hasn't been made, please plan your travels around the rehearsal schedule. If you have work or planned travel or any other valid reasons, please inform your choreographer as early as possible so arrangements can be discussed.
12. How do I choose which choreographer’s item to join?
If you are currently taking multiple choreographers’ classes, and there is a choreographer whose work you would like to be cast in, you should take most of your classes with them. If your schedule allows and you are keen to participate in more than one item, you may speak to the choreographers to discuss.
13. Do I need prior performance experience?
No prior performance experience is required. However, prior dance experience is necessary. Participants should be comfortable learning.
MAGIS Recital – FAQs
We’re glad to hear you are interested in the performance aspect of dance. However, as the rehearsal period is limited to 12 sessions, we would not encourage rushing into a performance at the very beginning of your dance journey. It is never too late to start, and we’re sure this will not be our last recital. If you are new to dance, we recommend starting with our 8-session Introductory Course, designed for complete beginners to explore contemporary dance in a structured way. Our next course begins on 25 March. Find out more here.
2. I have been taking weekly classes and enjoy learning dance at my own pace. I’m not sure if performing on stage is something I want to do. Can I still join the term and learn the choreography without performing?
If you’ve been dancing with us for a while, this recital is an opportunity to extend your studio practice into a performance setting. If you have been attending a particular choreographer’s classes regularly, you will already be familiar with his/her movement language, and they will also understand your body. The creation process often brings new insights that deepen your understanding of dance. We encourage you to experience dance as a performing art form.
3. I’m worried about forgetting steps or making mistakes on stage.
It is very normal to feel this way. The rehearsal process is designed to build the work progressively, giving you time to become familiar with the choreography and the group. Everyone on stage is learning and growing together. Mistakes happen — what matters more is your commitment to the process and to the work. Trust the rehearsal journey.
