Two Bodies, One Life: Puppetry as Movement Practice

05.12 / SATURDAY
2:00PM – 4:30PM
Where does the body end and the puppet begin? In this hands-on workshop, theatre-maker and puppeteer Oliver Chong invites participants to explore puppetry as an embodied movement practice through rod puppets and everyday objects. The workshop begins with ensemble rod puppetry. Working in groups of three, participants will share the manipulation of a single puppet, learning to coordinate breath, attention, intention, weight and movement across multiple bodies so that the puppet appears to think, move and exist as one being. The second half turns to object puppetry. Working individually with an object they have brought, participants will explore its weight, structure, movement and material possibilities, and discover how these can give rise to behaviour, character and life. Underlying both practices is Chong’s concept of the “duo-puppet”: the performer’s own body as the first and most immediate puppet, through which an external puppet or object is animated. Rather than thinking of themselves as manipulating something from outside, participants will explore how imagination, intention and breath can move through their own bodies and continue into another material form. [Important Note] Participants should bring one everyday object with movable or malleable parts, such as a foldable umbrella, piece of clothing or length of fabric. Level: Beginner-Intermediate Suitable for anyone with some movement or dance experience of any discipline.

Shared Momentum: From Fluidity to Strength

10.12, THURSDAY
7:30PM – 10:00PM
This 2.5-hour workshop explores the relationship between bodies through partnering, contact and movement, drawing from the artistic practice of Anna Borràs and Daniel Navarro Lorenzo and their current research in Exhale. The practice develops through a fluid dialogue between floor work, partner work and contact, exploring weight, gravity, momentum, listening and presence as tools for creating movement together. We begin with a collective physical preparation, exploring breathing, stretching, body awareness and different qualities of movement. Through technical and instinctive exercises, we investigate ways of entering and leaving the ground efficiently and organically, using its energy and the body's impulses rather than force. From there, we move into partnering exercises exploring how to approach, give weight, receive, redirect and move with another body. Through rolling, falling, lifting, weight sharing and pair and group dynamics, we discover how bodies can communicate through touch and movement, and how momentum can become a shared tool. The workshop invites us to explore trust, risk, presence and spatial awareness, learning to listen to ourselves and to our partners while remaining open and responsive to what is happening in the moment. We will also explore how fluidity can lead towards our own strength: when to yield, when to resist and when to act. Elements of the movement language and current research from Exhale will be introduced throughout the workshop. Level: Suitable for dancers and movers of all levels. This workshop is open to people of different ages and backgrounds, with or without previous dance experience. It is an invitation to listen, experiment, take risks and discover the possibilities that emerge when we move together. Our aim is to build trust, explore individual movement and create a supportive and respectful community through dance.

y integrating fields like quantum physics: the zero-field as the base of movement, together with the deep landscape of human emotion, his creations are designed to help you to return to a state of pure potential. The core of his philosophy is simple: Essence creates form. By shifting the internal frequency, you change the reality you project into the world. Explore how emotion takes shape in the body. Guided movement tasks invite participants to explore shape, space and dynamics, while developing clarity, intensity and emotional presence in movement. The practice expands artistic tools and deepens body awareness through creative exploration. Level: Suitable for all levels No prior dance background is needed. From Dance to Theatre
20.12, SUNDAY
10:00AM – 12:30PM
Becoming is the possibility of transformation — of changing into something new, of bringing what once existed elsewhere into the present moment. This workshop engages creative methods for turning imagined images and emotions into experiences we can sense and understand through the body. Building from this embodied awareness, we will examine how dance can serve as a form of dissent and a catalyst for social change. Participants will explore ways to create choreographic works that courageously engage with complex and challenging themes such as trauma, addiction, conflict, consciousness, and mortality.

From Softness to Impact
09.12, WEDNESDAY
8:00PM - 9:30PM
A dynamic and fluid physical practice combining floorwork, partnering, contact improvisation, and contemporary dance principles with elements from Anna Borràs’ artistic methodology, focussing on meditation, breath, and embodied awareness. The class begins with breath, spine articulation, and the use of weight to activate and prepare the body. Through guided explorations, participants develop physical readiness while cultivating presence, awareness, and different states of attention. The practice then moves into direction, momentum, three-dimensional awareness, flow, and interruption. Participants explore transitions between continuity and accents, developing clarity, efficiency, reactivity, and responsiveness to their surroundings and immediate impulses. The class concludes with a repertoiry phrase from one of Anna’s work, bringing together the movement qualities, dynamics, and principles explored throughout the session. The class is highly physical, while also inviting participants to develop greater body awareness, coordination, agility, precision, and performance quality. It offers tools for moving between the floor and standing with greater ease and efficiency, while remaining responsive and connected to others in space. Level: Intermediate Suitable for intermediate dancers with a firm foundation in dance and are comfortable with a variety of basic to complex dance movements.
